Chapter Ten

See? She could go on a date without getting advice from Gabe.

Sitting across the table from Grant Reed, Taylor tried hard to keep her thoughts away from a certain single dad. For the first time, her date—forget that it was breakfast at Ginger’s Coffee House instead of lunch or dinner—stayed through the entire meal and seemed in no hurry to leave. This guy had Bill Danvers, her last date, beat hands down.

Grant was funny. His sun-streaked, longish hair curled to his shoulders. Blue eyes sparked with a ton of mischief as though life was a roller coaster ride and he was enjoying every bit of the twists and turns. By his own admission, he was a huge geek. His attire wasn’t that of a successful businessman. Sporting an eye-popping orange tee shirt and well-worn jeans faded to the brink of threadbare, he didn’t seem to care that mismatched lime green socks peeking out of worn sandals hinted he might be colorblind as well. He appeared to be an open book, something Taylor had to admit was very refreshing.

Still, she really had stepped over the line with Gabe. Who was she to tell her friend not to put his life on hold? Better yet, that he should adopt Rose? He’d said friends helped each other, and that’s what she’d thought she was doing, but turning down more of his dating advice felt like they were breaking up. Not that they were a couple, but she, for sure, didn’t want to stop being friends.

She refocused on Grant. “What made you pick Angel Point as your new home?”

Talk about putting a life on hold. Was she the pot calling the kettle black or what? When she’d told Gabe she was probably going back to Portland, coming to that decision wasn’t because the mayor was waiting impatiently for her decision. Portland just seemed the right choice.

“There’s no bakery in town, which makes Angel Point the perfect location to expand our business. My grandmother has always wanted to live on the Oregon coast but was too busy with the shop in Rosewood to make the move. We came for a visit last year and fell in love. And since, as she says, she has fewer days ahead of her than behind, I convinced her to do it now while she still has the energy.” Grant pushed his empty plate away. “How long have you lived here?”

“Five months.”

“And you like it so far?”

Taylor fiddled with the French toast she’d ordered. “The job is temporary. I’m heading back to Portland soon.”

“Portland’s a nice place.” Grant drank his coffee black. He poured more into his cup from the carafe that had been left on the table. “Not planning to stay?”

“I don’t think so.” If Portland was really her final destination, there would be no coming back, except maybe for a long weekend here and there. From experience, she knew that wouldn’t often happen. Vacation was the other option, but once a year didn’t seem enough.

Done talking about her decision to go or stay, she leaned on her elbows.
